Bangladesh is a unitary, independent and sovereign Republic known as the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Bangladesh emerged as an independent country on March 26, 1971. The war of liberation ended on December 16, 1971 in victory of Bangladesh forces and surrender of the occupying army. This area was under Muslim rule for five and a half centuries and passed into British rule in 1757 AD. During the British rule it was a part of the British Indian Province of Bengal and Assam. In August, 1947, it gained independence from the British rule along with the rest of India and formed a part of Pakistan and was known as East Pakistan.

The Capital of the Republic is Dhaka. The state language of the Republic is Bangla. The citizens of Bangladesh are known as Bangladeshis. The national anthem of Bangladesh comprises the first ten lines of "Amar Sonar Bangla" of Rabindranath Tagore, the world famous poet.

The national flag of the Republic consists of a circle coloured red throughout its area, resting on a green rectangular background. The length to width ratio of the rectangle is 10:6 and the circle has a radius of one-fifth of the length. Its centre is placed on the intersecting point of the perpendicular drawn from the nine-twentieth part of the length of the of the flag and the horizontal line drawn through the middle of its width. Prescribed sizes of flag for buildings are 305cm X 183cm, 152cm X 91cm and 76cm X 46cm and for cars are 38cm X 23cm and 25cm X 15cm.

The national emblem of the Republic is the flower "Shapla" (Nymphaea nouchali) resting on water having on each side an ear of paddy and being surmounted by three connected leaves of jute with two stars on each side of the leaves.

Currency of the country is known as Taka (Tk) divided in 100 paisas with currency notes of the denominations Taka 500, 100, 50, 20 10, 5, 2 and 1 and metalic coins of Taka 5, 2, 1 and Paisas 50, 10, 5 and 1.

  • Law and enactment's oin consistent with fundamental right are Void.
